I talk about this term, “affiliate programs” all the time when I am explaining a little about each site . I wanted to take a moment to explain exactly what this term means. The term affiliate means “officially attached or connected” but how does this work in the dating world?
There are companies out there called whitelabledating.com or datingfactory.com that own a database of people and simply allow people to connect a dating site to their database. Have you ever wondered how there are so many dating sites? Have you ever wondered how dating sites begin? I mean, what does the first person on the site do? It is a bit like the first person who owned a telephone; what did they do with it? It is difficult to get any dating site to its critical mass, in other words, enough people on the site that people can actually start meeting other people through it.
But there are companies out there who literally just own the database that already has thousands of people on it, all you need to do is attach your site to it and send more people into the database. This way, someone who started a dating site yesterday can officially write on the home page “meet thousands of people today”.
So how do these people benefit? Well it all comes down to business, what generally happens is that these people who start dating sites send people into the database on a “free trial” but as we know, some people go on to pay. At this point the affiliate usually takes a 50% cut of what they pay. This is how the system works.
Just to give you an idea of how many people are doing this, whitelabledating.com can have up to 10 new sites open each week! (and that is just one of many affiliate programs)
Do bigger sites do this?
Yes, even sites like Eharmony and POF have a program where you can send traffic their way and they will pay you for it, but the difference is that everyone will ultimately end up on the site Eharmony.
However, if you sign up to a site like Plentymorefish.com, you might end up meeting someone who signed up to a site called maritalaffair.co.uk or Grannydating.co.uk.
So what does this mean for you?
This isn’t such a bad thing, you are not really being scammed as you are still meeting others who are looking for the same thing as you. You see, It isn’t just one huge pot of people, these databases are often niched, so if you sign up to an adult site looking for a fat woman, you will be put into a “pot” with fat women, or if you are looking for love, you will be put with others who are also looking for love, even if you did come from different websites. So this might actually be a good thing for you, it ultimately means more selection.
I mean the one thing people tend to do is sign up to multiple dating sites, not really knowing which site their future partner might of signed up to. Now, with the bigger sites like match or uniform dating, this is great but if you are signing up to smaller dating sites, which seems more niche, it might be worth checking if they are part of the same network or you will be wasting your money.
The easiest way to do this is go to the site and click on the login button at the top of the page. This will take you past the front page and into the database. Don’t worry you don’t have to be a member, but you will see what the login page to the affiliate database will look like. If these pages look the same, then it is the same affiliate site.
Many people will not like this as they feel that they are being scammed but as soon as you become aware of it, you will accept it is not totally a bad thing. I mean in the example above, you will not be meeting any Christians by signing up to f-buddy and visa versa as they will be niched. However, you are still going through to a database that is ultimately owned by the same people.
